Weird to use it in this context. Why not first ask if OP is straight or not? The way they worded it made me think they weren't even considering the possibility they were not.

If they weren't even considering the possibility that OP might not be straight, they probably would've just posted the question itself. "Assuming you're X" is generally understood to mean "your argument/phrasing strongly suggests you're X, but there's a chance you're not".
