But the big question is: is it any good? I'm really curious about it, but the alleged batshit fandom has kept me from checking it out.

I personally enjoyed it. The first episode is very rushed because it seems like they're basically trying to shove about three episodes worth of setup into it but after that it settles into a fun show that reminds me a lot of Avatar the Last Airbender (which makes sense, considering).

It's also got some interesting plot hooks that haven't played out yet and at times lovingly parodies the mecha genre.

It's pretty mediocre and all over the place when it comes to tone. I feel like the emphasis on childish humor and mood whiplashing (scenes that are played up to be very intense frequently get ruined by quips or comic relief) really wrecks it, like the show can't decide whether it wants to be taken seriously or not. I quite like Pidge and Shiro (they're the most plot heavy characters), though I feel the latter, with his very dark backstory, is wasted in such a kid friendly show.

Also, the first episode is terrible. I've never seen such a rushed, badly paced episode like that before and the relationships formed between all the characters feels forced and inorganic, considering they just met like 5 minutes ago.

I liked it, personally. I'm not super-invested in it, but I'll be watching it whenever the next season comes out.

it's well done.

writers from Legend of Korra set the tone, which is noticeable with the characterization (comedy and psychology) and character and setting designs. personally I didn't find it as engaging, or concentrated in quality as Atla, mostly because of the concept of the original.

I think the show will really improve with more material and lore to build on though, it has been planned as longer running show imo. maybe binge watch it when season 2 comes out?

If you like slapstick and cringey humour, mecha tropes and very mediochre animation (and basically the same things that some people liked about the worst parts of Avatar and Legend of Korra) then it's potentially entertaining.
