Definitely ask around randomly too, just tell your friends/family you're looking for something and you never know who might have something hidden around that they bought and don't want. I have two stores about that.

My friend Kate was renting a house and was promised laundry, but that meant they only included the hookup, not the actual washer/dryer. Her dad had a spare washer at home, but she figured she'd just go to Sears outlet or something and buy a cheap dryer, since she only needed it for a year, she was guaranteed to move in a year. Well she happened to mention it in front of my parents, who had been given a dryer and it was just sitting useless in my dad's storage trailer. So we gave it to her because we weren't going to use it.

My friend Jeremie bought a house but they needed to completely gut the house and replace everything. Well years and years ago, his parents planned on redoing their kitchen and stored the cabinets in my dad's storage trailer. As they had never gotten around to redoing the kitchen, they decided to gift him with the cabinets.

Oh and more stories like this!

My sister moved out last year and inherited my uncle's dining room set (table, chairs, cabinet) and when our neighbors, who had just moved, found out she didn't have a kitchen table, they offered her their old one because it didn't match their new house.

And friend Jeremie's boss was moving and selling his entire apartment so I got this really nice wine storage shelf and 17 wine glasses for really cheap.

So ask around! Or craigslist
