really dislike Darcy as a character.
I think it's mostly how she's portrayed in fandom, which feels exactly the same in every fic I read about her. ie. Very in your face, OTT quirky. Only the bad guys hate her, she often is coddled by characters in the fic. They constantly harp on about her red lippy, and when paired with relics Steve or Bucky, they nearly always describe her as looking like an old school pin-up girl. (Not that Kat isn't gorgeous, just that description has started to grate my nerves.)

I think it's fandom tropes wearing me down.
idk maybe I'm reading the wrong fanfics?

I didn't even like her in the first movie. I don't have any feelings on the actress one way or another, but Darcy is just irritating to me. She isn't funny and she just takes away screen time from better characters and necessary plot things.

I wouldn't say everything...but yeah. It's pretty obvious that most of the MCU fandom doesn't treat Darcy like an actual character, instead more of like a giant OC.

I'm sorry if you're not enjoying the fandom. It's fine that you're not into it and that you don't like a character.

At the same time, like. None of this is a crime. Writing Darcy as a self-insert is not in itself wrong. People aren't doing fandom wrong. They're just doing it in a way that does not serve your preferences.

I agree with you 100%, it's just something I needed to get off my chest.

I certainly don't want to ruin anyone's fun in fandom because I don't like/agree with their interpretation of the character. To each their own.

I don't tend to like comedic characters all that much in general. I get she's supposed to be the audience stand in, which is extra grating as I do not relate to her at all.

I don't mind her character existing, I just don't necessarily need to read fic that centers on her. Ever.

I can't stand Darcy. She was okay in the first Thor but in the second Thor she was insufferable. I am hoping she won't be in the third one at all because Jane isn't coming back.

This kind of makes me want to go back to my Darcy/Loki fic where she actually uses that political science degree to not so much help him as understand what's going on with the Realms and step on his neck some. Or try to, it's really hard to step on his neck when he's in full obsession.

(It makes sense after two-three fics of them hooking up and getting eventually more emotionally involved.)

I think I've only really liked her in one fic, now that I think about it. (I've liked fics with her in them, but that's different from liking her in a fic, you know?). It was her and Bruce, which really cut down the "pin up girl" comparisons (thank goodness), and it had her actually using her PoliSci degree instead of just being "Jane's friend".

Haven't really read any others that were as good. :/

I like her fine in the movies and aside from one pairing I never went poking around the fandom to find fic with her so I never got fatigue for her character.

I *loathe* Darcy. I found her annoying I the first Thor, down right obnoxious and awful in the second and her fanon version is impossible to avoid, even in nonMCU canons. There are more pairings of her and main character in my fandom then some pairings between actual canon characters. Ugh.

I liked Darcy in the movies for the same reasons I love Sam Wilson. They're both fairly regular people who get caught up in crazy adventures, they're both outgoing and funny/snarky, and they both seem really cheerful and (realistically) optimistic while surrounded by a much more serious and angsty cast.

I think you're just reading the wrong fics, honestly. Anything with her as part of a pairing is going to go to some lengths to make her sound sexy and fashionable, especially since she's the Designated Self-Insert Character for a huge swath of fandom's demographics.

if you are open to Darcy-centric recs, to see if it is just a particular set of common tropes you dislike, you might try "We'll Run Like We're Awesome" by themonkeycabal. Though an AU, it is only minorly explicitly divergent from MCU canon.

Shit, I'm a Darcy writer and I've been cringing at the fic that's been coming out as of late. It's been less expanding her personality and more fulfilling a set of tropes. Less plot, more fucking soulmate fic than you can shake a stick at.

Yeah, I kind of liked Darcy in the first movie, didn't care in the second movie, and pretty much avoid her in fandom stuff. Darcy as a lead character, at least as fandom tends to write her, doesn't interest me. (Turns out I don't much care for the Manic Pixie Dream Girl as a POV character, either!)

(Also, I see her as an undergraduate, so to me "poli sci major" doesn't suggest a particularly deep knowledge of the field, which means "Darcy saves the day with her knowledge" doesn't convince me either.)

All of which means I don't criticize Darcy in canon or fanon, but I do tend to avoid stories about her.
