That's terrific! Do what you must to get the original work done.

That said, there's nothing wrong with filing off serial numbers. If your original fic doesn't excite you like fan fic does, they're are ways to kill two birds...

Easier said than done, though. You can't just change names and situations slightly, most fics lack the world building and character development that people expect in original fiction and the absence is a dead giveaway.
