anime woes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's a relatively new BL anime in town (called 'Super Lovers') and pretty much everyone is gushing about it, because it has a good studio behind it and good VAs and the animation doesn't suck balls, yadda yadda yadda.
Meanwhile I'm screaming inside because it's pretty much another Pedo Grooming 101 anime and nobody warned me.

"he's mature for his age"
"he's older than he looks"
"in Japan the age of consent is 13"

*claws face in desperation*

Sooo... What anime ended up disappointing you and why?
What anime surprised you positively?

Yeah that's pretty much just what I expect from anime in general. Which is why I don't really watch anime anymore.

OP

I haven't watched anime in years and I decided to get back into it, just because

regret is my middle name

yawn. yes, 100% of anime is pedo. indeed.

SNK disappointed me. I just don't see the appeal.

But Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was AMAZING!

OP

I've seen the original FMA anime and it was decent enough... not amazing, but some episodes were good/memorable
if Brotherhood is better I'll definitely give it a try

Wait, is it a 13 year old and adult pairing? Eww.

But on that note, I'm always looking for more (canon) BL/yaoi series. I like pretty much every kink, with the obvious exception of shota.

Re: anime woes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
OP

in the first episode the kid is younger than 13 :/
and yeah he's paired with an adult (a young adult! as if that makes it better blerghh)

the only BL animes I've liked are No.6, Doukyuusei and Kachou no Koi
Loveless would have been good shit, but again, pedo pairing (still worth seeing for the other non-BL stuff imo)

That sucks :(

I recently tried Re Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (I think? It's one of those anime with long-ass names) because my friends kept raving about the plot twists or something.
And the first two episodes I was... kind of impressed. It was actually interesting, and though it was harem-y, it wasn't HORRIBLY haremy. There was actual plot, and actual mysteries set up!

.............aaaaaand then I kept watching and nope it's just stupid harem shit :|

A show that I watched recently that impressed me, though, was Revolutionary Girl Utena. I know it's a classic, I watched it, and... I get it. Wow. It was heavy, and real, but in a very good and mature way.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I don't bother with long-ass-name anime because in my experience it's usually another visual novel adaption and I tend to hate those

and gosh I loved Utena too
it's been like 15+ years since I watched it but I still remember it fondly

Ugh, Super Lovers. One of my friends recommended it because she knows I like BL, but the age difference really isn't my thing and it skeeved me out. So I guess that anime disappointed me too. Well, that and Himouto Umaru-Chan. It wasn't my kind of humor and I couldn't stand the main character.

Kamisama Kiss turned out to be better than I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be some Inuyasha knockoff, but it's a really cute and funny show.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to say Kamisama Kiss too! It's very charming.

Re: anime woes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Wait... Are people trying to deny Super Lovers is shota?

Re: anime woes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
OP

it's more about people conveniently "forgetting" to mention the obvious

even when they know I dislike shota

Re: anime woes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Uh? Most people I know were complaining about Super Lovers even before it aired because of the age difference.

I keep up with the anime scene pretty intensely and I don't know where you're coming from. I've heard a teeny bit about this one, but only to be told that everyone would be staying away from it because it of the shota. It is nowhere near remotely popular.

This is why I can't take people who say "all anime is like this and that's why I don't watch it" seriously. You don't even know what you're talking about.

Re: anime woes

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
OP

you don't even know the places I frequent, and assume I think all anime is the same and sux and I</i< don't know what I'm talking about? k

Kiznaiver ended up being a major disappointment for me. Once the story started to focus on the blue haired girl and white hair guy, I lost all interest.

Kamisama Kiss was the most suprising (in a good way).

Yeah, Kiznaiver disappointed me too. I was willing to give it a try even though the premise didn't sound like something I'd like, because Trigger's made stuff that was interesting. But this just... did not make me care, at all, and I'm kind of over stories that are basically "deus ex machina excuse for plot".

You have incredibly bad taste.

I am pleasantly surprised by the lack of pedo apologists in this thread.

I dropped Danshi Cheer, it moves waaaay too slowly. I know people love Sweetness and Lightning, but the kid&the fluff just wasn't realistic enough for me... a 3 yo with long hair that doesn't even get moody or whiney when she gets hungry?

Servamp is surprisingly enjoyable. it's anime tropes at their self-indulgent, contrived best, no creepy pedo or sexism.
the cast is like, ripped straight from a teenager girl's deviantart sensibilitoes with mostly multi-colored vampire boys called after the seven sins? the voice actors make the theatric bits work.

(also, Mob Psycho 100, but that just topped my already hopeful expectations)

Servamp sounds interesting! I'm gonna check it out.

I dropped so many anime series over time because they had started to annoy me, I don't even know where to start...

I liked Durarara!! at first but I kinda just... stopped watching because it really had started to bore me (which is strange because my fave had just gotten his long awaited bad-ass-boost).

Something that really positively surprised me was Shingeki no Bahamut:Genesis. It's well animated, well produced and pretty entertaining (if a little short).
I didn't really expect a lot of Bungou Stray Dogs, bug it turned out quite nice as well!
Another that I like so far (but won't make any promises about because it's just currently airing) is 99 Days.
