Most Comforting Fiction
(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)Same question for fanfiction as well - what is the most reliable comforting stuff for you?

Re: Most Comforting Fiction
But if I am just looking for something to cheer me up, I have several deaging fics bookmarked.
I ignored the bit about fiction in general! I think the only 'go to' I have for that are Laura Ingalls Wilder books and some comic collections I have (hyperbole and a half, Get Fuzzy).

Re: Most Comforting Fiction
For fanfic, hurt/comfort with emphasis on lots of comfort.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)Other favorites: Lucy Maud Montgomery's Jane of Lantern Hill and The Blue Castle. Both are about female characters with overbearing, intrusive or controlling parent-figures who basically dictate their children's identities. Both Jane and Valancy (from The Blue Castle) are awkward, timid and cowed--until they manage to get away and find autonomy and fulfillment for themselves. Also, in each case a house is involved--and I love a story about a house.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)When it comes to original fiction, I find that I can't concentrate if I'm too upset so I don't tend to read comforting books. Fics are generally fine because I don't need to pay too much attention.
Re: Most Comforting Fiction
When I'm sad, or if I'm angry with my mother specifically, I've found that watching the film Penelope really helps. Tangled, too.
The A Softer World comics help when I'm sad too.
Honestly anything that's familiar is a comfort to me.

This is from my iTunes library right now. So, if nothing else, I'll always be on your side as to listening to the Simpsons' songs as not being weird. I also have a handful of the Futurama songs.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 01:48 am (UTC)(link)For movies I like Christmas specials. There have been some Really Bad Times that I've sat and just watched Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story. Also weirdly I went through a depressed patch and almost all TV/movies I tried to watch were irritating except Xiaolin Showdown. I have no clue why, it wasn't fantastic but it didn't annoy me like everything else I tried.
