Most Comforting Fiction

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What kinds of fiction - genres, tropes, etc - do you find most comforting? What do you turn to when you're down?

Same question for fanfiction as well - what is the most reliable comforting stuff for you?

Happy canon fix-its, because I so often find the canon frustrating and sad.

H/C for sure. The worse the H, the better the C in those situations.

Hurt/Comfort is my go to. Especially platonic hurt/comfort.

But if I am just looking for something to cheer me up, I have several deaging fics bookmarked.

I ignored the bit about fiction in general! I think the only 'go to' I have for that are Laura Ingalls Wilder books and some comic collections I have (hyperbole and a half, Get Fuzzy).

Harry Potter (books), my favorite movies (depending on my mood, that's Titanic, Mad Max, the Winter Soldier, or Spirited Away), and goooood old h/c fic.

Escapism for me. Fantasy mostly and also scifi, particularly if it has fantasy tones. If I'm feeling miserable, I want to escape to another world for a little while.

For fanfic, hurt/comfort with emphasis on lots of comfort.

When I feel down, I reread Shirley Jackson's "Louisa, Please Come Home," about a young woman who walks away from her life and relocates under a new identity. There's something that obscurely cheers me up about Louisa's long, gleeful description of hiding in plain sight and moving through a crowd where "nobody really saw me." And I've always liked her consoling phrase: Nothing is hard to do unless you get excited or upset about it.

Other favorites: Lucy Maud Montgomery's Jane of Lantern Hill and The Blue Castle. Both are about female characters with overbearing, intrusive or controlling parent-figures who basically dictate their children's identities. Both Jane and Valancy (from The Blue Castle) are awkward, timid and cowed--until they manage to get away and find autonomy and fulfillment for themselves. Also, in each case a house is involved--and I love a story about a house.

I like fics where people get their hair washed for them. Super relaxing.

When it comes to original fiction, I find that I can't concentrate if I'm too upset so I don't tend to read comforting books. Fics are generally fine because I don't need to pay too much attention.

When I'm angry, I listen to Simpsons songs. "We Put the Spring in Springfield," "Happy Just the Way We Are," "Underwater Wonderland," and any of Lurleen Lumpkin's songs most especially.

When I'm sad, or if I'm angry with my mother specifically, I've found that watching the film Penelope really helps. Tangled, too.

The A Softer World comics help when I'm sad too.
Honestly anything that's familiar is a comfort to me.

I love Simpsons songs! I have a folder full of my favorites. My brother thinks I'm weird for listening to them like any of my other music.

This is from my iTunes library right now. So, if nothing else, I'll always be on your side as to listening to the Simpsons' songs as not being weird. I also have a handful of the Futurama songs.

People destroying their enemies by befriending them makes me happier than any dozen puppy gifs.
And I fucking love puppy gifs.

For fanfic h/c heavy on the c

For movies I like Christmas specials. There have been some Really Bad Times that I've sat and just watched Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story. Also weirdly I went through a depressed patch and almost all TV/movies I tried to watch were irritating except Xiaolin Showdown. I have no clue why, it wasn't fantastic but it didn't annoy me like everything else I tried.
