There are different kinds of vaccines. Some of them use viruses that are already dead, and those are generally safe. Others use viruses that are alive but weakened, and those do carry a small amount of risk, which becomes larger if your immune system is already weak. Because my immune system does not work right, I can't safely have live vaccines, so my survival is dependent on healthy, non-immunocompromised people being vaccinated and not spreading the disease to me. (And I do mean survival--if I can't even handle a weakened disease, I can't handle one at full strength.)
