uh... unpasteurized milk is usually fine, and actually doesn't "go bad" like pasteurized milk, so freshness isn't the issue. It will just thicken and curdle and taste a bit cheesy. there is, however, a risk of contamination, as well as the danger of contracting tuberculosis if the cow is infected with bovine tuberculosis. where I live they are tested for that but there remains a certain risk, of course.

So drinking unpasteurized milk you bought from a farmer is pretta safe, just like it usually is in developing countries and has been for people who keep cows and other milk-producing cattle, for milennia. However the risk of contamination grows with how much the milk is handled and transported, so it makes sense to only have pasteurized milk in supermarkets.

Also I don't give it to my kindergarten kid. When she's 6+ I'm going to let her eat sushi and raw eggs, and I'll probably also let her drink raw milk.

Yeah, I think that's what I meant about the only situation I trust it - really, really fresh, from a trusted source.

It's one of those things that anyone with a spot of sense just has to be careful with.
