Based on #1

What lines have you never been sure you're correctly deciphering, or did you misunderstand initially? Can also apply to song lyrics.

(YouTube links may be helpful, but not necessary.)

There's a recent song that I thought was called "Lock and Load." Turned out the singer was stretching "lover" into three far-separated syllables. I'm kind of disappointed.

I have looked it up several times but I always forget exactly what the line in Hotel California is. "Warm smell of ????, rising up through the air." I think because I've never heard the word "colitas" outside of that song.

Hey, wait, I literally just now thought of something.

You suppose they meant carnitas? Maybe Don Henley enjoyed carnitas but had misheard the name.

nayrt, but I very much enjoyed that write-up.

This is my theory as well. Because carnitas smell wonderful.

I always used to think it was something like "cali dust" and I thought that meant some kind of desert smell? "Cali" had something to do with California or caliche? I dunno! I've never heard "colitas" outside of this song, either.

I just googled it. Apparently colitas isn't really a word people use in English. And the Eagles used it wrong for the most part. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1053/in-the-song-hotel-california-what-does-colitas-mean

I thought it was "Goletas." Goleta is a town on the California central coast.

I just heard it today and I thought the same thing!

It's not just you. He's singing "girl" but pronouncing it "guh". Totally sounds like "guy" when the next sound he makes is an L sound.

It ends up that the word "like" kind of ...steals the L sound that was supposed to belong to "girl" lol.

I used to think that the line was "Almond Jack is King of the Pumpkin Patch". I thought it was a play on almond joys, and other candies.

....It's not, it's "Our man Jack".

I understood the words, but botched the meaning of the line "make that Tiffany jealous" in Selena Gomez's "Good for You." I thought there was some mean girl named Tiffany who was a total bitch and the singer was totally going to outshine her and make her jealous. Turns out it's actually about diamonds.

I seem to have really missinterpreted the whole song. I thought the singer was supposed to be kind of pathetic and desperate to please, but in the video Selena is just smiling and acting cute.

I feel like the main emotion it's trying to go for is "horny"

Ayrt

Still less dark than my initial impression!

I was sure that the title line in "I Just Wanna Live" was saying "I just wanna let it loose", due to the way the background backup-singer-noises (?) kinda blend in with the singing at that part. I'll never hear it any other way.

In "Up Around the Bend" I confused the lyric "leave the sinking ship behind" with "leave this stinking shit behind".

I'm a bit hard of hearing and have been since I was a kid. So, almost everything.

But what's really fun is listening to songs in a language I don't speak much of, and my brain turning the lyrics into words in my native language.

The lines in Star Wars I remember having trouble understanding is the one in ESB where Han yells at C3PO "Hurry up Goldenrod, or you're gonna be a permanent resident!" when they were piling into the Millennium Falcon to escape Hoth. I only really understood that after reading some of my brother's SW novels that had Han using the "Goldenrod" nickname.

The scene in Jabba's palace where Han has been shoved in the same cell as Chewie and they talk about the plot to free Han, and after being told Luke is a Jedi knight, Han makes a quip about leaving Luke alone and he get delusions of grandeur, I could pick up part of the line, but it wasn't until later years when I fully understood what "delusions of grandeur" meant and had an adult ear to listen to dissect the line, that I fully got it.

I also had problems in the scene where Luke levitates C3PO to scare the Ewoks, and C3PO says "I never knew I had it in me" - I think it took me a while to get that one too, but not as much as the ones above.

Ghostbusters (the original) had quite a few lines I couldn't understand as child, but that is more because they were more adult in meaning and went over my pre-teen head because they were sexual implications. I get them just fine now.

That's just a few that I recall, I'm sure there's more, but I'd have to watch a pile of movies I'd seen in my childhood to recall them.

The one that always got me in Star Wars was when Luke said "That's what you said when Biggs and Tank left." Granted, with Biggs getting his scenes cut, who or what Luke is talking about might be confusing to anyone, but I had zero clue what he was saying after the word "when." I didn't even get that he was laking about people. Eventually I realized "Biggs" was in there, but I heard the other name as "Ten."

for years, I thought they were saying "Gypsy with the gold tattoo", lyrics actually are "Gypsy with the gold-capped tooth". - Love Potion Number Nine

And this one got my whole family:
The song is Secret Agent Man - we constantly hear it as Secret "Asian" Man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGZ0ntpSx2Y
