"Do they just not have the capacity to recognize that Moon Child could even be a viable name?"

I would guess this is it, phrased in a less pretentious way. It's not that they are for some reason incapable, it's that Moon Child is not a phrase most people parse as a name.

You have the capacity to recognize that Sghrkhjfhkf can, technically, be a name, but you're probably not going to naturally parse it that way.

Uh. ...I meant literally not possessing the linguistic prototype to recognize the combination of the two words as a viable person's name.

Then your word choice was bad, because it sounded like they could not, instead of could in theory but did not.

Someone who can't swim can't swim. Someone who does not have the capacity to swim will never be able to swim.

The amount of fucks I give right now is suboptimal for this conversation.

Ok, sure. It just seems often that you come off pretentious when you aren't meaning to, and your word choice impacts that greatly.

your word choice impacts that greatly

It affects it just enough that one subset of individuals will get mad if I fail to use academic language and another subset will get mad if I do.

Can't please everyone all the time, man.

I don't think "pretentious" is the word you're looking for but it's no mystery that herpymcderp is an asshole.
