Finding Roommates

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I live at home and it's really stressful. It's so crowded and loud. I don't even have a room of my own to hide away in. I'm working but don't make enough to live comfortably on my own.

I'm looking through Craigslist to find a roommate. Any tips? Or do you have a better place to find roommates?

I found the best room mate of my life through Craigslist. You just have to be super upfront about what you want, what you can compromise on, and what you can't. Those things should include how clean things stay, division of chores, how you handle food costs (shared/not shared?), and rules about guests or significant others coming over.

You really should meet face to face (Skype really isn't good enough to get a sense of whether or not you'll mesh well) and have a really solid list of demands when you do.

It also kind of helps to have a probation period if you can afford it. I've kicked out people before who said they'd live up to what they agreed on in the house rules discussion and then... well, didn't. That's not something you can really do if they didn't agree to it first.

I've never looked for a roommate before, but I've been a landlord, and tbh, I think I would ask for a reference or two, the same as a landlord would. And if your state (and/or the state where they used to live) has an online databank of court cases, I would check their legal history too. You don't want someone with a history of being taken to small claims court for unpaid bills, someone who's had a mechanic's lien filed against them, or someone who has had a suit for unlawful detainer (i.e. an eviction lawsuit) in their recent past. If you see more than one entry on the order of "XYZ Property Management vs Joe Shmoe," avoid them.
