Sure did. And guitar too, iirc. Also, he sings, IE the little life forms song :} (and Blue Skies).

The music usually felt less weird in TNG.

I think TNG set up music-playing scenes better. The idea that a big ship that is set up to accommodate families and even has a bar, would have bands and music groups who do performances seems sensible to me.
