Re: Which film genre do you think needs a huge revival?

You can easily make revisionist Westerns. You just have to want to, and I'm not sure who does. It's a very specific slice of history with a very specific appeal. And most of the things that you can do in a Western, you can do just as easily in other genres that have more immediate commercial appeal (see: like half of John Carpenter's movies).

I think that's the main problem: When people think of westerns, they tend to want something like in ~the good old days~ and something in the style of a ~1950s-60s western could go down badly today. And the same people might possibly reject a revisionist take on the genre (or at least, I imagine a lot of producers fear that they might so they don't even want to risk it). And people who are not interested in westerns as a genre probably won't suddenly love it just because it's a different take on it.

Yeah. You basically have to have somebody who still wants to do all the genre signifiers, and do it as an action movie rather than a serious drama, while still doing the revisionist stuff. And usually those things don't go together.

I think it could work. Just unlikely that somebody could get that movie made while also having a fresh take on the genre.

Yeah - considering there already were several tries like this (with varying success) and it didn't really cause a revival of the genre, I think it's just a genre that isn't too popular anymore.
