(Anonymous) 2016-09-17 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)And I know I probably shouldn't let it bother me but I think I got all excited because it was an action-adventure movie that wasn't making a big deal about her being a girl in the previews (None of that stupid 'no-man' stuff from the Frozen trailers), just.. having her be the hero. And then oh, the reason it wasn't making a big obnoxious deal of her being a girl is... he's not a girl. That's why it gets to be a regular action-adventure movie.
I had a similar letdown with Song of the Sea because it was amazing and gorgeous and heartbreaking and the only two characters are a boy and his father, the women are just sad-lamps and plot points. She's a SELKIE! She has MAGIC! And she spends the entire movie doing nothing but tagging after her ordinary human brother as he saves the day for her.
