Re: Okay, but the 1982 film wasn't the original.

They're dissimilar to the point that talking about the 1982 film as a remake of the 1951 film absolutely Does Not Make Sense.

Which is weird because John Carpenter was massively influenced by Howard Hawks, so he was certainly aware of the 1951 version. I'm sure I've seen an interview where he talks about it but I can't quite remember...
