With baby showers, the point is it's an opportunity to give expectant parents gifts. They're about to have a baby, and there's a lot of stuff they'll need to buy, and even more stuff they'd love to buy but can't because they're busy buying all the stuff they *need* to buy. Obviously, anyone who wants to could get them a gift on their own, but it's nice to have a set time to come together *before* the baby's born to celebrate and to contribute to the stock of things they'll need to start this little person's life out.

So why do people have showers for a second/etc kid then?

Because people are greedy and it's a way to guilt all your acquaintances into buying you things. It's the same reason why gainfully employed people who have lived together for 10 years before getting married still participate in wedding registers so they can upgrade their home furnishings on their friends' and families' dimes.

+1. I get the concept, but the execution is often more towards the "whoo hoo, gimme the gifts" bonanza.

Instead of getting mad at people who marry older and have registries, we should ask why we rush to shower young couples with a lot of stuff they don't need right away and will be able to afford themselves within the next couple of years anyway.

Yeah! I need designer towels, dammit. The fucking millennials can eat off paper plates for a few years.

MTE. I'm not drying my precious skin with peasant towels.
