The beginning might not be the best place to start. Season 1 of GBBO was a lot different than the later seasons -- there was more educational stuff and less baking/contest stuff. Usually I like the educational, background stuff, but in this case it really didn't work for me (maybe because I'm from the US and it was aimed at UK folks?).

Somewhere mid-season 2 it got more like the current GBBO, so you might start with season 3 or later.

I'm from the U.S. too and thought the "educational stuff" was just fine. There also wasn't that much of it, just some brief historical background about traditional baked goods, etc. I don't think the feel of the show was so different in early seasons that it should be skipped.
