Hinata ? really. She did nothing except be in love with Naruto until the timeskip.She did not try, she let Naruto defend her against Neji. At least Sakura speaks up for herself and if Hinata is sooo so strong she would not let her father push around.In my point of view she worse than Sakura. So you FAIL

She had the first four fifths of a My Name is Inigo Montoya moment. That means more than anything Sakura has ever done. And she certainly did not 'let Naruto defend her against Neji'. She kept fighting Neji until he stopped her heart.

Have you read/watched past the timeskip? Seriously, you need to get with the times, anon.

Pardon me if I'm not impressed with her finally doing something after two hundred and seventy chapters of doing nothing, in an arc explicitly designed to make her seem useful that affects almost nothing outside of itself.

The issue isn't that she's never done anything, ever, it's that she's done just this side of nothing while consuming screen time like Chouji at an all-you-can-eat.

And I'm supposed to like characters only if they become awesome within a certain ammount of time?

The truth is, I don't like her for what she can do, or for how often she succeeds. I like her because she grew; because she bettered herself. I like her because she realized how useless she was, and wanted to do something about it. That, by my definition, already means that she's not useless. Because she has a use: She inspires me to try harder, as well. If you have a problem with that, then I guess there's nothing I can say to make you change your mind.

No, you're supposed to like characters only if they become awesome in an effectual fashion and stay that way, continuing to improve or attempt to improve from there like human beings do.

...not really. For all of part one, and I mean all of it, she existed for no reason but to make the boys look awesome by comparison. Just because she gets better in part two doesn't mean all that magically vanishes. And really, even in Part Two she hasn't done a hell of a lot.

What I meant was, she is at least trying to make herself better. I acknowledge that, though she has improved, she still is pretty ineffectual as far as actual victories. (And, on that score, my initial reply was incorrect.) That doesn't change the fact that she's still fighting, and that she's still seeking to improve.

That's what I like about her. And, given Kishimoto's general dismissal of female characters, that's really all I can hope for. (That, and I just like her personality most of the time. There are definitely things about her that annoy me, but I wouldn't find her nearly as interesting if she was perfect).

I can't agree. Throughout all of Part One, her 'seeking improvement' was nothing of the sort. It was just her bemoaning her weakness. Until the last second, she never actually did anything to try and and improve herself. It didn't necessarily need to have succeeded, but there should have been something.

Fair enough. You've shown logically that my interpretation of her character is incorrect. I'm sorry for my earlier presumptiveness.

Even so, I still like her. I guess I've been deluding myself for thinking that there was any real reason-- I just...do.

See my last reply to pikabot. I have been shown the errors of my interpretation. ^^() (Even if I do still like her, though I can't for the life of me say why.)

Protip: Taking a longer time to grow as a character =/= bad character.

Keep in mind Sakura was an average 12 year old girl with no past issues/childhood trauma to motivate her and no special hereditary eye-hax powers. Hell, with these odds against her, no wonder it took longer for her to grow into the respectable character she is now :/

Also, that arc was what helped them track down Sasuke the first time and got rid of one Akatsuki member. That's far more useful to the plot than anything Hinata has ever done.

An Ataksuki member who only existed in the arc, specifically for the arc. Kishimoto could have skipped his existence altogether, and it would have affected nothing. My memory could be failing me about the Sasuke thing, though, because I honestly remember nothing of the sort.

The same could really be said of most Akatsuki members, barring Itachi, Tobi, Pein, etc.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure when Sasori dies he tells her about Orochimaru's whereabouts or something which helps them eventually find Sasuke the first time. Then again, I could be getting things mixed up D:

I think you're completely wrong about Hinata (but I think the OP was way wrong about Sakura as well). Though Hinata certainly had a crush on Naruto, she wasn't defined by it. The central development for her character had to do with her family situation and her confidence as a ninja.
