Gotta interject here, but there is nothing "superfeminist" about her statement. Superfeminism implies someone trying REALLY REALLY HARD for female equality, so please don't buy into stereotypes.

Oh God, STFU already.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Here is what I hear whenever someone tells someone to STFU about feminism:

"WAAAH GET IN THE KITCHEN & MAKE ME A SAMMICH"

I mean, actually it's probably "seeing misconceptions about feminism corrected makes me feel uncomfortable because I might have to examine my own prejudices if I listened to them," but my version's more amusing.

Thank you. My thoughts exactly.

What if I'm female and still want you all to STFU about feminism?

Re: Different anon

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you're still a goddamn moron. Maybe even moreso :)

Re: Different anon

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL But no, please continue to dispel the misconceptions of a typical feminist know it all. You do it SO WELL.

Re: Different anon

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay!

Re: Different anon

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That changes nothing about my original comment. :)

Re: 36 + 42

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because you're a twat who seems to think YOUR view on feminism is right and every one else is wrong and not entitled to think otherwise.

Or am I wrong in seeing you and a few certain others jump on people when they don't think feminists or feminism is the greatest thing ever? Because no one could disagree with a feminist, because then they just hate women. Case closed.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize that just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I think you're not entitled to have your opinion, right? Or does just being disagreed with make you oppressed by the evil feminists who are trying to silence you? :(

I will happily argue feminist issues--whether porn degrades women or not, whether affirmative action is the way to go, whether sex work should be legal--without insisting that anyone who disagrees with me hates women.

I will also attempt to correct people who do things like use 'feminist' as an insult, because that doesn't belong in any view of feminism, mine or someone else's. Obviously doing so means that I think everyone who disagrees with me hates women. Yay strawfeminists!

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, if you disagree with a feminism you are by definition disagreeing with equal rights for all.

Sounds pretty woman hatin' to me, bucko.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I wouldn't actually go that far, because I know decent people who've been burned by crazies in the radfem/second-wave section of the feminist movement and thus have trouble calling themselves feminists without feeling uncomfortable. But, you know, they don't go around bitching at people who do call themselves feminists and argue against misconceptions.

...oh shit, I disagree with you, obviously that means I think you're not allowed to have your opinion. BE OPPRESSED.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
But that's still based on their own perceptions of what feminism is, rather than what it actually is. This person I'm talking to is in a thread where the literal definition of feminism is thrown out all over the place, so in this case I really see no excuse.

That said, I completely see your point.

I AM SO TRODDEN UPON

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no.

Re: 36 + 42

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe Ive always heard it used wrong, but I thought "superfeminist" implied "female supremacist" rather than "person who tries really really hard for female equality?

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Feminism and any words derived from it have always and will always mean the strive for female equality.

There are just a lot of people who like to demonize feminism is what =\

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, there are, and they are as the other person said, "female supremacists". They are certainly not feminists of any kind, no matter what they claim.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-04-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Superfeminist was a feminist who has super powers, which she uses to fight injustice and search for her missing pants which were stolen by the wicked Mail Super-Macist, forcing her to battle legions of fiends in what amounts to a bathing suit with a metal bust?

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] rmarques.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
... You win. Pass go, collect 200$ and get yourself an Internet while you're at it.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, but I think the feed and caring of the Internet might be a little much for me. Folks lose arms that way.

Re: 36 + 42

[identity profile] quatrepolar.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what stereotype you think I'm "buying into"; all I meant (or implied, perhaps) was someone who strives for female equality to the point where they overcompensate. That is what I would call a "superfeminist," and I wasn't aware that the term even existed before -- I coined it as I was replying.

Nor do I have a grudge against feminism as a whole.
