The first thing that comes to mind is giving directions using landmarks. In the city, I can go by names--"turn left at See's Candy, then right at Orchard"--and it usually works because there's only one See's Candy or Orchard in the area. Out in the country, I have to use street names, because I'll never be able to remember a natural feature well enough to distinguish it from any other natural feature you might see along the same road.
