How do you deal with a job you hate but cannot leave?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, sure, I could quit my current job that I absolutely cannot stand, but it's permanent contract and it pays the bills. I've done odd jobs here and there but nothing stuck, so taking a leap from the safety of my current job terrifies me. At the same time, my current situation is driving me crazy and I'm mad at myself for being such a coward.
Help? What should I do?

Start looking for other jobs. It's unlikely that you'll find something perfect that you can start immediately, but you'll get an idea of what is out there and what your options are.

Thanks. :)

You don't have to quit your job to start looking for a new one, unless there's something I'm missing.

It is actually easier to get a new job when you are already employed.

First sit down and think hard about what is fucking you off about your current job. There is no sense applying elsewhere if you are just going to get sucked into the same sort of hell. Once you have done that, look around for jobs that don't have that and look hard at your own resume to see if you have the relevant skills for that job. If you do then it is time to start spamming all the employers in the area who do that with your resume, if you don't then suck it up and keep on with your current job whilst trying to learn those skills.

As others said - look for other jobs! If it's "your field", surely there's another company/organization where you can do something similar? I think in the modern world, it's pretty normal for people to be constantly looking for other jobs even if they love their current job.

Though, I guess it depends on what you hate about your job. If it's the work in general, maybe a switch in profession is called for, and you might need to prepare for that by taking trainings/classes/whatever.

But seriously, anon, you're an adult, you don't "owe" it to a job you hate to stay there forever. You are a free person! Don't be ashamed or scared to leave if that's what you need to do. (though I don't recommend doing it until you have another job lined up)

Badly.

I decided last week I will be quitting if they do not fire me, but I'm going to try and hoard cash for 2-3 months before I do.

Other than the obvious answer everyone has already said (finding a new job), remember the benefits of your current job. I absolutely hate the job I have now. It's a super toxic environment. But looking at my student loans and how much I have paid off, does ease the dread a bit. Maybe try saving up for an item you really want.

Also, make you life outside your job fun and fulfilling. I am constantly eating good food, having Netflix marathons, and going on hikes. All things I love to do.
