Re: Presidential Debate Reactions

You're welcome :)! Yeah, the debates themselves can be interesting and enlightening sometimes, and it's a good chance for any remaining undecided voters to kinda figure out which way they might lean (in this particular case I don't know how many fence-sitters are even left, mind but eh).

But the campaigning and getting political donations and our 24 hour news cycle and political ads, as well as the primaries and caucuses we have to narrow down possible contenders for each party, is why these things take forever. Politicians are basically spending up to two years doing nothing but campaigning to get a spot as a potential presidential candidate.

I've heard about how significantly shorter political campaigns are in other parts of the world, and I wouldn't complain one bit if we ever went to that particular model. If nothing else, I think restricting the amount of time politicians can campaign and run would allow them to focus on other parts of their job, like making or passing important pieces of legislation.

I really don't see how - from a legal point of view - you could ever really stop politicians from campaigning for President, unless you banned them all from the state of Iowa. You could start the primaries later, and limit political fundraising and advertising, sure, but there's still going to be campaigning if people do that.

At the end of the day, politicians wishing to be president have a huge incentive to start campaigning and getting publicity as early as possible, and 24 hour news networks and websites have a huge incentive to cover it all. And it's not like the American public is going to stop caring. So basically it's all fucked.

I think there would have to be a cultural shift that started disapproving of candidates who started campaigning too early so that the benefits of campaigning more than your opponents is outweighed by the negative press you receive. I don't know how that shift would occur though.
