I've only seen the pilot so far (planning on watching more), but Shiro strikes me so much as the Group Dad that the idea of shipping those two is weird to me. (For the record, Klance doesn't do much for me either, at least at this point. It's just a bunch of stupid kid fighting. Maybe this changes as the show progresses?)

It really doesn't. That's basically their entire relationship except for one moment of "okay maybe he doesn't hate me enough that he wants me dead" framed as a 'tender moment' that basically immediately gets forgotten. They're pretty stereotypical bickering rivals at this point, though who knows if that will change. It likely will at least somewhat, I can imagine them learning to get along and all that, but truthfully this show is pretty barren for slash potential as of right now on any front.

Well, I mean, Lance and Hunk are buddy-buddy and get along really well, but one is part of the juggernaut ship and the other guy is overweight and African American (I think?), so you can imagine how that works out in fandom. (It doesn't.)

I don't think Hunk is supposed to be African American. I've seen a lot of people headcanon him as Native Hawaiian. I don't know if that's true or not, though.

Also, Hunk/Lance does actually get a decent amount of fanart. I don't really like Sheith, but some of the shippers actually really like Hunk/Lance and draw cute art. Johannathemad, for instance, who is a big name fanartist on tumblr and likes Sheith drew some really cute Hunk/Lance art: http://johannathemad.tumblr.com/post/150195024987/carly-rae-jepsen-voice-i-really-really-really#notes. 15k+ notes is pretty good.

AYRT

Native Hawaiian? That's actually really cool and it makes me hope that's what the creators intended. :) Not very often indigenous Hawaiian people get characters to identify with.

Also, I do know Hunk/Lance has some followers, and truthfully I feel like the Hunk/Lance love from Sheith fans is less "pair the spares" and more "actually enjoying this pairing", which is...not the feeling I get from pairings like Shiro/Allura or especially Shiro/Shay, but what I meant was that Hunk/Lance doesn't have much at all compared to the two juggernaut ships, and the pairing is hurt even further by Lance being part of one of them. If you look on AO3 there isn't that much Hunk/Lance fics period, and about half of what is there is just like, side Hunk/Lance with endgame Lance/Keith, that type of stuff.

Also jesus that fanart is fucking cute. It kinda hurts though, makes me wish this pairing were the juggernaut lol. Fuck Sheith and Klance both if I could get this! :P

There might be some "pair the spares" thing going on with Sheith shippers who like Hance, but I think it makes sense for people who like one to ship the other too, considering both pairings are based on established friendship rather than rivalry like Keith/Lance. Both strike me as a "comfy" and sweet type of ship.

People assume that because when a screen is showing their thoughts, Hunk briefly thinks of spam musubi and shrimp-pineapple skewers which are both foods pretty strongly associated with Hawaii, so a kind of nice subtle way to hint at it.

Native Hawai'ian makes a lot of sense for Hunk!

I personally don't see the Group Dad dynamic you see (though I do see Big Brother Insticts aimed at Pidge), but that's exactly why extreme anti-Sheiths are sending death threats, suicide encouragement and gore images to Sheith shippers and call them pedophiles even after Keith was confirmed to be a (former) student at a university/college institution.

I don't get the Group Dad thing in the slightest. He never acts like a dad at all! Coran on the other hand is ridiculously a dad.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Coran is the perfect space dad! Just... "Here comes the food lion! Schwoooo~" and bringing all his space kids water packets with straws and stuff. Coran never gets enough love in this fandom.

He's also the only one who notices when Lance is homesick and follows after him to try and cheer him up. Other than Team Captain peptalks I think the only time Shiro's offered any attempt at emotional support was to Pidge.

Perhaps that impression will change as I watch more

(I should get on it)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You should. When I watched it with my brother, he didn't think it was good at all until episode 4.
