Yeah and it's something that happens in quite a few fandoms.
(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)I see it fairly frequently in really large fandoms. I think there are a few reasons. Part of it is there are some writers who've watched little to none of the actual canon. Part of it is writers really latching on to one aspect or personality facet to the detriment of anything else about the character, sometimes out of willful blindness. Part of it is that it's easier to write one-note characters.
I've also seen it in Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 01:39 am (UTC)(link)But yeah, many cases of fandom latching on to a few traits they like and forgetting all the nuance and depth a character has. (It's a particular disappointment of mine when characters end up being less badass/smart because of it.)
