They'll get... something. But I'm pretty sure it'll all end with Shiro dying or getting taken by the Galra pretty quickly, so... no more Shiro.

I'm looking forward to the "strong and emotional scenes" Keith will have with Allura that the staff said would be in S2, and I hope it's really, really ship-teasy. That would create drama.

He's the only reason I'm considering watching this show, so if this is true then, yeah, no thanks.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he died in the original anime. And have you seen the S2 trailer?

I'm not sure I'll keep watching if they kill him off. As much as I like the others (Hunk, Pidge and Coran especially), it's nothing compared to how much I love Shiro. We'll see what happens.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've said this before, but you guys need to remember that this reboot is a kids' show. It's TV-Y7. It's literally in the children's section on Netflix. Establishing a group of friends in the first season and then killing one off is...not really the modus operandi of most children's shows lol.

I'm like 95% certain Shiro will live. The trailer was just to create ~drama~.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Times have changed, though. He may not die, but I bet he'll be removed from the team in some way so that Keith can fill the leader role (the staff has talked about Shiro knowing Keith very well and seeing that leadership is part of his destiny) and getting Allura in a Lion. It's not what I want, but I think it'll happen.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I guess. I can't see him just being put on a bus, though. Even if he is removed from the team, I feel like he'll remain a major character. I don't think I've ever seen a kids' show that removed a heroic major character like that.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Consider the Galra getting hold of him again, though, and brainwashing him into becoming their weapon until he's finally saved or comes to his senses enough to make a heroic sacrifice at the very end of the series. Remember that scene with Sendak in Crystal Venom? The Galra have definitely planted something inside him.

Anime does dark stuff all the time, so it's possible that things like that will eventually find their way into western cartoons as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's kind of a mistake to compare anime with children's Western cartoons. Children's western cartoons have waaaay more constraints. Like, yes, this is a Netflix show, but still. Anime/manga is a whole different ballpark, my friend. Shounen is for a young male audience, and I've seen some wild shit. I've read a freaking snuff manga that's published in a shounen magazine.

Voltron, like many Western children's cartoons, has a pretty predictable trajectory: characters meet up, become friends, help each other become stronger, and then defeat the Big Bad though ~teamwork~ and ~friendship~. In fact, I'd say Voltron pushes to the max considering the characters form a super robot where they're forced to work together.

Shiro spending a good time getting tortured, eventually getting out of it and making friends, and then eventually sacrificing himself and dying by the hands of his enemies is really not something I can see happening. I can definitely see your theory about him being used as a weapon, but then his friends will rescue him, and he'll learn he can rely on them, and they'll teach him to love himself more.

The show just pushes positive vibes and positive messages too much for me to buy any sort of dark theories like this. Considering the shame and guilt Shiro feels, having him die instead of learning to love himself more and living just doesn't fit, imo.

We'll se what happens. Somehow Shiro will disappear so that Keith can become leader and Allura can pilot a lion, that's pretty much a given considering the source material they're very open about paying homage to. I think he'll be out of the core team for good. How that happens will become clear as we get more seasons.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
da

They're also very open about the fact that they're not sticking super close to the source material, and made sure to tell the viewers that just because something happens in the original, that doesn't mean you can be sure it will happen in VLD. They want to keep the audience on their toes, and that S2 trailer felt like a massive red herring to me. As you said, they're paying homage to the source material rather than just making the same show but with updated animation and designs.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
They've also said that they're making the Voltron they remember, not the Voltron that actually was. And one of them said in an interview that he remembered Sven as being the leader before was "sent to the hospital planet". And now Shiro is the leader. Hmmm...

I don't know, anon. They've put too much weight in interviews on Shiro seeing leadership qualities in Keith, and so many people want Allura to get a lion that I don't think they'll want to disappoint their audience. It would make more sense to me if Allura got the black lion, though, with her being a strong and compassionate leader and everything and Keith not knowing How To People.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The way I see it, Shiro will be be "sent to the hospital planet" too, it just won't be permanent. Allura piloting a lion can't be a constant thing anyway because she has to be the one piloting the castle as the only living member of the Altean royal family - unless they somehow find another survivor who could take her place. And I don't really understand why people would rather see Allura demoted from the de facto leader to piloting one of the lions, especially since she wouldn't even get to be the head.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Correction: Coran can pilot the castle, Allura just has to charge it up with her energy so they can create worm holes. See the last episode of S1 for that, when they had just enough left to create one more worm hole.

But I agree with you, Allura is plenty awesome in the position she's in now. If she was in a lion, she wouldn't be able to do cool things like saving the Balmera. Because seriously, her part in that episode was much cooler than the Paladins going "Form Voltron!" "Split up!" Form Voltron again!"

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I meant when I said Allura has to be the one piloting the castle - obviously Coran can pilot it too, we've seen him do it, but without the ability to create wormholes they're at a major disadvantage, so they need Allura there (unless she just keeps hopping between her lion and the castle but that probably wouldn't work very well).

I hope Keith/Allura doesn't become canon. I'm not expecting anyone being gay and I'd really prefer a gen ending, but I'd rather take anything but that.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Also, it would just seem to come out of nowhere? :/ I prefer Shallura. I feel like they compliment each other better.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Keith and Allura will get more interaction and "strong/powerful and emotional scenes" together in S2. Maybe it won't seem to come out of nowhere by then.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly, we're only on S1 right now. Keith and Allura are confirmed to get "very emotional" interactions in future episodes so just because it feels out of nowhere now doesn't mean it'll still be like that in the future.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'd take Keith/Allura over Shiro/Allura any day, though. I find Shallura about as exciting as an unsalted, boiled potato. I'd prefer a gen ending, but considering who the people doing the show are, that seems pretty unlikely.

Best romantic ending for me would be if one of the guys gets an alien boyfriend. Then none of the ships become canon and we still get a gay couple.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, best ending would be if Pidge got an alien girlfriend. It would make the jokes about Hunk and Keith teasing her about her "girlfriend" even better if she got one for real.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Pidge would prefer a robot, though.

I'd still prefer a guy/guy pairing. We've already had some woman/woman pairings lately, time for the guys to get something.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's true, I suppose. Sometimes I let my lesbian bias get in the way lol. It sucks that it's easier to get f/f pairings past the radar because holding hands and stuff can just seen as "gals being pals."

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not both?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
A robot girlfriend?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-27 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
I like both Sheith and Kallura. The entire fandom is going to hate me.
