Re: What is something you bought that was a waste of money?

In my high school anime convention days, I would buy SO MUCH anime/video game merchandise. I'd go nuts in the dealer room - and to be fair, back then, this wasn't stuff one could easily obtain in any local game/comic store. I'm not even talking only about figurines and other more obvious collectibles, I bought anything that so much as had the logo of my favorite shows/games. Pillows, decks of cards, wall scrolls, stationary, T-shirts, etc. And every single doujinshi I could find.

Now, as an adult, I'm cleaning out my old room in my parents' house and am like, what was I thinking. I never even used this stuff, it just went in my closet. I don't think it'd be possible for me to sell this stuff, since the fandoms are older now. And jesus I have a pile of doujinshi porn in my parents' house. I feel bad throwing it out, but what do I do?

Very much a waste of money. I wouldn't say I'm any less of a fangirl these days, but I don't accumulate useless stuff like I used to. My obsession pretty much can be contained entirely within the internet.

I know where you're coming from. I had so many anime posters in college because I plastered my walls with them. Now? They're sitting rolled up and I feel guilty throwing it out but the shows are old now and not popular anymore.

I try to buy useful fandom things now. Like socks (Harry Potter and Star Wars) and I have so many Star Wars and Doctor Who kitchen gadgets and blankets.

Rather than throwing them away, try freecycle or something? There's probably someone out there who will want them.

I never went TOO crazy, but I definitely used to buy things in dealers' rooms just because That Thing I Like was on it. As a teen, it was... I dunno, but it was the 90s and I didn't have good internet access, so it was like my only enduring connection to the wider world of fandom was through stuff. Plus, it felt a bit rebellious to wear a T-shirt with some obscure, geeky thing on it. "I'm not like those other teens with their boring mainstream interests!"

I'm way, way more discerning now, since my spending money is also my pay-the-rent money and save-fore-retirement money, and I really just don't have anywhere to put random crap like that.

I always wondered about that, since I could never afford anything bigger than a single keychain and watched teenagers blow through hundreds of dollars every weekend. Now I know.

Don't underestimate fandom, though. Old school stuff gets a nostalgia revival now and again so you might be able to pawn it off - at garage sale prices, mind, but a dollar is better than putting it in a landfill. Oh and porn is always marketable, especially old school fandoms because so little of it was easy to get back then, people were legit pissed that the single copy of a doujin from their favorite circle had been snapped up and they could never get their hands on it. Put it out there, you never know.

Yeah, I feel you on that. I still have a crapload of anime memorabilia and I just need to get rid of it. D:

I don't think it'd be possible for me to sell this stuff, since the fandoms are older now.

100% untrue. In fact, it's often the older fandom stuff that can bring the most money. I sell on eBay and not too long ago I got $70 for a set of old Gundam Wing figures that didn't even have the original box.

You never know on the older stuff. I mean, some people remain fans of a series long after it ends. My main fandom is "Inu Yasha", for example. And the most I ever spent on a single collector's item? Was for a "Rose of Versailles" doll.

Now me? My regret is spending thousands of dollars on anime laserdiscs that I imported from Japan that have all now been released on DVD and are even available via torrent. Now they're just really heavy paperweights. :(
