I could never afford to amass big collections of commercially-produced anything (DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs) before it became clear there wasn't any need to, but I certainly spent plenty on blank tapes to record all my favorite shows! It was probably actually cheaper than paying for a cable package that includes DVR, but my cable box takes up so much less space than all those tapes and the whole thing is just easier. I don't even have to pay attention to when a show premiers because it's still programed to record from last season.

I still have some old VHSs in a box somewhere! I think I have a bunch of Rugrats recorded.
