Fake tan.

Septum piercings. Looks like a bull. For a while, everyone was doing it, too.

Stretched earlobes.

Hipster glasses. You know, the ones with the big, thick, black frames.

Huge beards. Not the neatly trimmed ones that I've seen all my life, but the big American Civil War general ones.

Pierced septums and stretched lobes are frightfully ugly. I'll never breathe a word to anyone who has one, but I have no idea why people would want to do that to themselves.

Septum piercings look like you have shiny snot dripping from your nostrils. Cringiest things ever.

I briefly dated a guy with gauged earlobes.

They smell like shit. Like, truly gag-inducing. And he wasn't a dirty guy in general, it was just...those fucking earlobes. It smelled like sebum and rotted flesh. Blugh.

Oh god no. Did you ever tell him?

Yeah, a couple of times, and I tried to be sensitive about it since no one wants to be told that something about them smells so awful, but he just shrugged it off and said that's what they smell like.

nayrt

If that was true, it'd be a very good reason not to get stretched lobes, IMO. But I doubt it is... regular old pierced ears can get funky if you don't wash the area properly. So can belly buttons. Any bodily crevice is prone to collecting sweat, lint and other icky matter that stinks if you don't wash it regularly. Your ex might not have been a dirty guy, but he was falling behind on his personal hygiene.

My old roommate had stretched ears and they NEVER smelled like that. Sounds like he was neglecting washing them (or had some kind of infection?)

He was good about washing, which is the weird thing! I don't think he had an infection, but honestly I don't really know, he might've. It really put me off the entire concept, though.

Stretched lobes with black plugs look absurd to me. If you had precious metal in there, or something crystalline, it might be interesting. As it is, it's a couple of big dots on the side of your head.

I think some people pull off septum piercings and hipster glasses, but I agree forreal on the other three.

oh my god I fucking hate the civil war megabeards. They didn't look good in 1863 and they don't look good now.

I basically agree with all of these.

Though I think a subtle fake tan (if you can find one that works for you), purely for use in the summer, can look good. Personally I've never risked a real fake tanner (for fear it would be orangey and not-at-all subtle). But I do like that Jergens Three Days To Tan lotion, or whatever it's called.

I hate fake tans too.
