What's your (literal) comfort food?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-30 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily your favorite comfort food in the sense of indulgent, but the food you'll always be happy to eat even if you're feeling really tired or sick. Are the two things the same for you? Or do you have "comfort foods" that aren't usually considered comfort food?

My mother's macaroni and cheese. I don't know where she found the recipe, but I've never tasted any other mac and cheese that even comes close to it.

Rice and stir fry is actually a big comfort food for me. I love stir fry. One of my favorite things to eat.

If I'm craving something sweet, then caramel and chocolate.

Also, for some reason I really love water crackers (Carrs or the local brand). I could eat a box a day and not get sick of them. So tasty.

Also soup. Pretty much any kind. I'll even eat soup in summer. I love soup.

My father's soup. If my dad is making lentil, chickpea or avgolemono soup, I want at least two bowls of it, no matter how crappy I feel. If there is crusty bread, so much the better--I'll eat crusty bread even if I have a sore throat.

Give me a Payday candy bar and I'll eat it.

I just ate one. Yummy. I actually like the taste of caramel better than chocolate. It is just that chocolate has those endorphin affects that are nice. But caramel is addictive.

My dad's chicken noodle soup. He only makes it in the winter so I try to stock up on it then. It's just tons of vegetables and chicken and my brother and I complain usually about what's in it (too many potatoes for me, my brother always picks the lima beans out).

Or he'll do a beef stew and my brother give me the beans and I give him the beef. I love it with the dumplings.

I'm always excited when we do baked whole chicken (or turkey) because I know my mother will use the bones and leftover meat to make her chicken (or turkey) noodle soup. It is one of my favorite things. Her beef stew is great too. And her potato soup. And lentil soup and split pea soup. Honestly, I could just eat soup every day for the rest of my life and be happy. I really love soup.

Soups just make you feel all warm, no matter what, but they're so relaxing on a cold day.

It's not quite cold enough yet for soup but I'm looking forward to it.

I posted the recipe we use at our house years ago. Pretty easy to make, wonderful in cold weather, AND you can eat for like three days.

Instant ramen noodles with lots of hot sauce and lemon. My parents used to make that for me and my sisters when we were sick and I still eat it that way when I have a cold or something. When I'm feeling tired, I prefer my mom's tamales and champurrado.

My grandmother's meat pies. Oh my god, I don't know what she puts in those things, but they're like happiness in a fluffy, flaky pouch.

Get her recipe while you can. Volunteer to help make it if you can. You'll be glad you did.

Sometimes when I have really bad depressive episodes the only food in any way appealing to me is onion rings. Idk what's up with that.

When I'm feeling really tired: I really just want any kind of pasta or pasta salad. Just...something I don't have to expend all my "spoons" to get a bowl of.

My comfort food for when I'm sick: a nice big bowl of ramen with some teriyaki sauce, a little bit of tabasco sauce, some lemon or lime juice, and a little bit of cracked peppercorns.

My comfort food for when I'm depressed: sushi. Just, a nice plate of sushi. Something that, even when I'm 1000% done with everything...I derive a little bit of joy from.

When I'm sick, fresh pineapple, oranges or tangerines, chicken cup noodles with fresh thyme, celery, raw ginger and garlic, and hot pepper, and herbal tea (usually something minty) with honey.

Roast chicken, store bought because actually trying to cook a chicken at home is complicated. The ones sold at Coles (the supermarket I regularly buy at) are just fine.

Also Vietnamese ricepaper rolls, with some decent salad content in them, and soya sauce on them.

Plus lemon iced tea to drink, or a fruity iced tea, but one that has a tart flavour to it.
