Re: Bouncing off of the professor question...

I had a teacher who was a fairly nice person, but just wasn't teaching the right way for the right people. I took what was supposed to be a digital media class, but the whole thing ended up being about fandom and social networking. Which was right up my alley, except the fandom stuff went over most people's heads. And... he made the mistake of using the most extreme examples for what were essentially fandom virgins. He made us watch a video about LARPing, for instance, and he introduced us to fanfiction.net and mentioned Harry Potter fanfiction. So of course everyone watched the LARPing documentary and saw the Harry/Draco fics and came away with "these people are freaks." I have no idea why he didn't stick to more low key examples of fandom. Some of the social media stuff was "off" too, just in how he approached it.

In fairness, I do think the kids in that class were a little too resistant to "geek stuff." I had to take classes where I didn't get the subject matter, and I didn't act like I was too cool to care. But still, he didn't go out of his way to make it overly accessible.

I should mention that the LARPers were hardcore LARPers, and one guy actually bordered on being one of those "soul bond" types in that he seemed to think his character was a real person or something. I was legitimately concerned for his mental health.
