I had a teacher for an evening algebra class who outright said "I have to fail half of you to keep my job." And he did. It's worth noting that most of the class was working-class black women who were either just getting off work or going to work after class; the only person who seemed to be doing well was the middle-aged white guy in the back.

Teacher was from Kentucky and looked like if the British tried to make a Jeff Foxworthy clone during a worker's strike.

He once flew into a 10-minute rage about how it's "bad teaching" if he uses test material from the textbooks. He also deliberately scheduled an important test that most of us were guaranteed to fail (and thus fail the class if we'd bombed the first test, and most of us had) for immediately after the deadline to withdraw from the class.

Did I mention this was like, basic college-level algebra?

How did I handle it? I didn't. I just took the F and moved on, 'cuz I didn't really know what my options were. I ended up switching colleges the following year.

... how on earth would failing half the class help the guy keep his job? Really weird.
