Super Bowl commercials have become A Thing. It's the most-watched thing in America - I think this year's was around 100 million people - and a 30-second commercial costs a few million dollars. Commercials that air during the Super Bowl are written specifically for the Super Bowl, are brand new, and - supposedly - very funny or very important.

American culture, man.
