Re: Depressing and gross horse stuff.
The colour could be a couple of things. If you've been having a lot of wind lately the nostrils could be irritated by dust. Generally bilateral discharge (gross stuff coming out both nostrils) is either a higher injury (head, chest), irritation from allergies (usually causes eyes to weep too) or foreign bodies, or an infection of some kind (upper respiratory, gums, guttural pouches). The colour makes me think dirt, blood, or bacteria, or a combination of those. You probably know horse blood is one of those weird things that doesn't always look like blood because it's thick and the colour can be anywhere from bright red to black.
If your pony isn't too fussy about being touched, you can put your ear down next to where his girth would be on his side and have a listen. It won't be as clear as a stethoscope but you can pick up crackling or any other weird sounds sometimes.
Just because of the recent death in the stables, I would be inclined to at least call the vet and ask if they think it's worth taking a look at. Mention the colour and that he sounds a little off with his breathing, and that he's been near a horse that recently died of unknown causes. They're definitely more qualified than I am to ask the right questions. It's very likely just one of those weird, disgusting, scary things that happens to your horse and you panic over it for a couple of days and then everything goes back to normal.
My big concern though would be that it's an early sign of something contagious like Strangles. I'd keep him isolated if he's usually with other horses and wash your hands in between if you're looking after any others. If it is an infection, then it's usually easy to treat if you get on top of it quickly. Most vets will offer you a payment plan for urgent prescriptions if you can't pay up front.
You sound like you love him a lot and I'd hate to think I told you to relax and not worry about it if it does become more serious. They're lucky they're so damn cute because they're expensive as hell. I think that's the only thing I don't miss.

Ooh. Yeah, if you have a big growth of weeds you might need to have a pulling party with whoever you're boarding with. We used to make a day of it every few months. It's mostly fireweed here that is the issue. Cobbler's pegs too if you ever want to have a horse that's not covered in them. So many hours of detangling that I will never get back. D:
I'm glad you seem so on top of things and you're so knowledgable. I'm sorry if I got intense or preachy. I was responsible for a lot of newbies back in the day so I'm always in oh shit mode when I hear about a sick horse. Growing up in an affluent neighbourhood, everyone is like "my kid likes horses so I bought my kid a horse. what do I feed it?".
