Does anyone have a Chromebook?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My laptop has died and it would cost more to fix than it would replace, but even the replacement cost is a little steep.

I was thinking about getting a Chromebook, since most of what I use my laptop for is surfing the net and writing, and since my laptop died I've been doing all my writing in Google Docs anyway.

Since 99% of what I do is doable on the Chromebook, and I still have access to the desktop if I need to use any actual Windows programs, it seems like a logical decision to me.

But I want to find out about people's personal experiences first. Does anybody use a Chromebook? Do you love it? Hate it?

Thank you!

I've never worked with one. But I'm already wary of Google/Chrome because they're so intent to put your real name everywhere and connect every account you have with the others, that I'd be too afraid to use one to be honest. I'm too paranoid for this shit.

I use g.docs and Chrome for a couple of things, and i've just refused to let them connect anything to anything. Also, none of my online stuff/emails are my real name, so - Tabaqui Jackal has an account, not My Real Life Name, you know?

It's not hard to dodge that stuff if you really want to.

I'm very happy with my chromebook. I bought it 3.5 years ago an it's still going strong. The only negative I can think of is there is something very weird with Monster.com. Like I cannot click on links and I've seen similar complaints from other Chromebook users. It's very weird.

Works really well for anything in a browser, outside of that, your options are limited. Great battery life. My cheap one had trackpad problems.

My daughter's friend has one and she says you can't dl anything. She's not really all that chuffed about it. I don't know what your thoughts are about Dell, but they're having a lot of laptops on sale right now, some for under 300, some under 200 (American), that would probably do what you need it to do.

Hrmmmm, odd. She said she couldn't. The SO said it's because you have to have, basically, an xhd, as there's only RAM on a Chromebook? Or am i remembering incorrectly? Perhaps she has not xhd.

I'm the one who was ranting about Dell a few days ago (short version: laptop wasn't receiving power at all, they tried to sell me a new motherboard, I tried to find out if they'd even checked the power jack and could not get a straight answer) so "not a Dell" is one of my computer requirements for the foreseeable future.

OH, yes, i remember that. All my PCs have been Dells (and the Monstrous Bebe's laptops and the SO's) so we haven't had the same issues, luckily, as you.

I use a Chromebook and I quite like it! It's my writing/facebooking/general fandom-ing thing. It streams okay (not great) but as far as using it for general stuff, I'm happy. :)

I despise my chromebook. It's fine for a browser, but if you want to do anything else yeesh. It doesn't play avi files, you can't get any non-google product (itunes, skype, etc), and the mousepad is also quite hard to use.
