Ren Faire

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to a Renaissance Faire today! It was fun, though the grass was very muddy. Who else has been to one? What do you like the most?

Ha, of course someone had to put a Tardis at the Faire today.

I like the combat re-entactment most.

I've been to a couple :D (The only issue I have is the incense laden pathway in one of them - I do love to breath - so we just look at the map, see where they hid it this year and studiously avoid it as best we can)

My favorite part is the costuming - unf, I've drooled over several of the cast members at the NY one I go to (not ashamed to admit that!)

and I would have love to have seen a TARDIS at a Renfaire ::laughs:: The most I ever saw were the trolls from Homestruck (?) and maybe a Finn the Human.

Well, the mud sounds appropriate. It is the dung ages. I once went to the world's first, last, and only, Maid Marian and Her Merry Men convention and we were all offered free mud (it makes sense if you've seen the show) for our clothes. It was fun. And thankfully no white person tried to cosplay as Barrington.

I always go to as many of the music events as I can. I love hearing the Renaissance music, and sometimes they talk about the old instruments that don't really get used anymore. And the festival I always go to around here ends every night with a pub sing that's really fun.

I love looking at the costumes too.

It's been a while but I loved the guy who goes around insulting people in Shakespearean language and the mud pit show where two "beggars" act out plays and splash people. Also giant roast turkey legs FTW!

There's one every year in the Charlotte area and I love it!

It has lots of people in costume and actors everywhere but I think my favorite part is the abundance of craft booths around. It's amazing. I think I spent $250 at one of those things.

mead, bread on a stick, pork on skewers. There used to be one booth that made perfect apple pancakes. also there's a local artist here who does beautiful hair accessories. And I love watching the blacksmith do cool stuff.

Did you go the NorCal one? My sister and her family were there yesterday.

The Ren Faire here in SoCal is in April/May, and you still can 90+ degree weather even then. I always pray for clouds, and try to go as early in the run (and in the day) as possible.

I've had the same nice quality green chemise and black skirt for about 8 years now. I don't if it's just that I've lost weight or if the elastic is dying, or both, but I should get a new skirt because it was too loose in the waist the last time I went. I also have one of the nice woven hats with a braid of black and green ribbons. I'd love a bodice (had a 2nd hand one ages ago; doesn't fit anymore), but I can't really afford one. A friend is very good at corsetry and has insisted several times she'll make me one some day, which is lovely but I know the rate she works on her sewing projects lol.

Sometimes if the weather is very cool, I can wear a costume from a play I was in years ago, which is a sort of Jacobean girl-disguised-as-boy getup. Tunic, black doublet, striped red/black (to imitate paneing/slashing) padded trunk hose, and either tights or leggings. It's very warm, so I've only worn it the faire twice in the last 10 years, but it looks awesome. I even have boy-short hair now, but it's always too hot and just more comfortable to wear the chemise and skirt and say the hell with it!

My favorite part of the faire is the food! I usually get a roast duck leg quarter and an artichoke with herb butter. And a lemon ice. And cider, although the last cider I got there was not tasty and I was disappointed because that shit's expensive.

Is that like...a thing at Ren Faires? Cause when I went to our local one last year, it was very muddy. But outside of that, it was ok. I just think I fit the nerd con thing more than I do Ren Faires. I LOVE the clothing though.

I've been to my state's three times. Once as a kid, twice as an adult (a few years ago).

I want to go again, but have no one to go with and (probably) no transportation to go myself (don't have my own car).

I used to love everything about them but the people who used to run them changed a few years ago and they weren't as much fun after that so I stopped going.

I took my sister to her first fair in Minneapolis last weekend. It couldn't have gone better.

She was really into it, even got dressed up in my old outfit to blend in. There were jugglers, and mead, and someone selling didgeridoos made from PVC pipes. And the sky was clear, despite a 60% chance of thunderstorms.
