And people wonder why Cassandra Claire's work is so derivative and why Sarah Rees Brennan's work is so flatly unmemorable.

I dunno. It's clear from everything Brennan has ever said that she'd been writing original novels since she was a little kid and never stopped. I haven't read her stuff because it's nothing I'm interested in, but she doesn't deserve to be dumped on for writing fanfic for the rest of her life...

She had all her fanfic taken off the Interwebs in prep for her first novel. I went to try and read it and it fell flat within the first ten pages. It tried too hard sound Whedonesquely banterish and the descriptions of things were in some cases very clangy.

I read C.C.'s work and my first impression was Buffy/HP fanfic and it was pretty awful. Then again, she's a pretty awful person, so... I tried reading her books and was bored to tears. Brenan, however, I found a lot more interesting. To each their own
