Recs please OP?

I couldn't keep up with WTNV, but I love the idea of it and would love to listen to other fictional podcasts.

Not OP but I listen to sooo many podcasts. What kind of fictional ones do you want?

Ooooh! I like sci-fi, small town drama, drama in general, mystery, suspense... I'm not so fond of comedy (unless it's witty) or romance.

I'll recommend both the Bright Sessions and Our Fair City. Bright Sessions has a canon gay couple (since the OP mentioned it) and is one of my favorites.
Our Fair City took awhile to grow on me, but once Herbert West shows up it really takes off. The dark humor seen in the live shows (one of which ends with a character realistically gasping for air as poisonous gas chokes him while a choir sings "You Can't Always Get What You Want") really appeals for me.

Uncanny County is good, but I've yet to find something that really grabbed me in it.

On the matter of "gay characters", "The Deep Vault" mentioned above also has a gay (ex)couple.

Can I jump in and rec Ars Paradoxica? It's a time travel/sci-fi drama with some conspiracy theory stuff thrown in. Also a canon lesbian and an asexual character who actually uses the term. I adore it.

I am upset other people liked something that I didn't end up liking! How dare they!

What makes me shake my head is the implication that if Thing didn't exist, all of the people who are fans of Thing would instead be fans of all of these other things, when there's no guarantee of that at all.

Yeah I think that's what bothered me about it too.

All I know about WTNV is what a shitstorm the fandom became. That was enough to keep me away.

Their fandom has a lot of the same markers as the Steve Universe and Voltron fandoms. Meaning policing WHO can be shipped and WHAT kind of art can be made. And anyone who does anything not in line with the fandom police is called out, attacked, and ostracized.

That's disappointing since the cast/etc are so nice...

Are there any fandoms that developed in the last five years that *didn't* become shitstorms?

British Bake Off?

Food Network Fandom (nice people there, though most of them are older people who are into Epsom salt soaks, plastic canvas, scrapbooking, Pinterest and knitting. Also, the Sandra Lee bashing seemed to have watered down, because she came back from after having a double mastectomy)

Haikyuu!! (I haven't seen any shitstorms there. Lots of nice people there)

That's such a silly way of looking at things.

People aren't MMO bags, we don't have a specific number of slots to fill up. Some people are into just one podcast, some people are into twenty podcasts. WtNV isn't stealing people from something else, and there are clearly a lot of people who enjoy it.

Personally, I wasn't a podcast person before I started listening to WtNV, and I've tried other podcasts since getting into it and not found anything that was as fun for me to listen to. I enjoy Cecil's voice, all the characters, the general atmosphere, the radio show format, etc. It's actually kind of a soothing thing I listen to when I'm ill or upset, because the combination of Cecil's voice and the way things are taken in stride in the series makes me feel better.

Whether another podcast is "better" is utterly irrelevant.

A thing is not any other thing.
