Re: Xenobiology

I've always thought the life cycle of the Large Blue butterfly (Maculinea arion) is awesomely creepy. For its first three molts the larva feeds on wild thyme like a normal caterpillar, but after the fourth it lives in an ant colony. It resembles a larval ant sufficiently that it gets picked up and taken into the colony by a soldier that mistakes it for an ant. Worker ants take care of it as if it were part of the colony--and all the while it feeds on ant brood until it's old enough to pupate.

The idea of the ants tenderly caring for this predator in their midst makes me imagine a community sort of like a convent, with youngsters watched over by stern female authority figures, everything governed by strict daily routines and rituals. They worship a winged angel-like being--it's all very solemn and lovely. Only, children keep disappearing and nobody wants to talk about it. And it seems to have begun after a strange, silent child came into the community...
