(Anonymous) 2016-10-06 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)I had low expectations for Toy Story 2 because it was a sequel and sequels often aren't that great. Pixar had no sequel track record at that time (or even a very long track record in general) so there was no reason to assume it would be as good as it turned out to be.
I was very excited about the LOTR trilogy and did have high hopes, but it all could have gone disastrously wrong and I was so glad it didn't. It was mainly the art direction, costumes, and things that really surpassed my expectations.
Fury Road's TV marketing made it look very much not my thing (not bad, just not something I'd enjoy) but I went on a friend's recommendation... and then went back to see it 5 more times because it was so good.
I had always meant to see Ghostbusters, but I made a point to go early in its release because a friend said it was really funny. It always seems that people exaggerate how hilarious everything is, so I wasn't expecting to be literally crying with laughter, which I ended up doing.
