I have the same fear. I am not good with crowds and standing by myself. What if no one talked to me or worse what if everyone laughed at me. It doesn't help that I would want to dress up and don't fit into the normal sexy hot cosplayer mold.

anon, trust me, the "sexy hot cosplayer" is not normal. Are there hot cosplayers? Of course. Are they all hot? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NO. Not by a long shot. The internet has lied to you if you think you need to be hot to cosplay. If you want to dress up, do it. Be the cutest best most fun whatever you can be and don't give a single brain cell's thought otherwise.

Dear friend, I am a fat lady who has cosplayed a fair number of fat and not-fat characters (mostly side characters), and I've gotten lots of positive attention -- despite fatness being nearly carte blanche for derision and dehumanization in mainstream US society. So try not to worry about people judging you if you dress up. Generally people come compliment you/take pics if your outfit has something cool in it, squee excitedly if you're their favorite obscure character, or just sorta... not bother/not care if you're not dressed in something they're interested in.

As to talking to other people / making friends... I totally, totally understand anxiety in crowded social areas. But a fair number of your neighbors at the con are in the same boat! Sometimes you gotta be the one to extend your half of the bridge. Go to a panel for something you're interested in, chat with your neighbors before the panel starts -- you already know they should be interested in the topic, so that gives you an ice breaker. If you dress up, go to a photoshoot/meetup for your source material and talk with fans there. Ask someone if they made that nifty bit on their costume, and if they did, how? Try to start small conversations, even just one-on-one, and bond over your more specific interests.
