Hi, same anon from earlier in the thread.

Different anon, similar but slightly different sentiment. I'm more regretful and wistful about an earlier -more innocent- time than prev anon who is an angry little puppy. You can ask Case if you want, he tracks all these things now. Every single little thing you post he logs, but don't worry, it is safe in his yahoo account.

AYRT--huh. I dunno, I can't think of a single racist costume I'd be disappointed to not be able to wear. What do you regret not being able to do?

I like the aesthetic of kimono, but I'm also into doing stuff right and there's so fucking many layers I'd sweat to death tbh. Some Indian bellydancer type costumes are awesome (and if you actually bellydance I'm not sure they count as appropriative if you avoid bindi and darkening your skin) and I always thought bad ripoff war bonnets looked like, well, dyed chicken feathers which is probably what they're made of. Weird suede "Indian Princess" bullshit with fake turquoise jewelry and ultrasuede minidresses is just embarrassing for the wearer, tbh. And I'm kind of out of ideas for other stuff outside of those awful "look, he's got a straw hat and a poncho he must be Mexican" travesties.

Oh, and I'd be actually horrified if I saw anyone in those fake tattoo bodysuits Disney's selling as Moana merch, because there was a thriving trade in actual Maori heads by Westerners for awhile because the art was so awesome, but, you know, trading severed heads.

nayrt, but I would agree with you that I like the aesthetic of a kimono, but would be hesitant to wear it.

And while it wouldn't be my thing, I wonder if the cowboy/cowgirl type of costume is out of vogue these days as well. Obviously the "Indian" costumes are offensive, but I think the cowboy/cowgirl costumes might be frowned on as well.

The sexy costumes are also not my thing, but there's a backlash against the sexy nurse costumes, because nurses don't want to be fetishized.

It does seem like the list grows every year. Fortunately, the typical horror/scary type of costumes still seem to be on the "good" list.

AYRT--google mokomokai. Or don't, if you're squeamish.

I would also like to know what costumes you can no longer wear that you wish you still could, just out of curiosity.

Also, are you PROTECT YOUR DATA AT ALL COSTS anon?

It was when I was a child. We used to do Arab, Red Indian Chief, Old Indian Fakir, none of which was meant to be harmful and was not seen as racist in those days. Obviously they are now, but I am allowed to feel a hit of nostalgia for those times. Also there was "Japanese person" but that one was meant to be racist and offensive to the Japanese, on account of the unpleasantness. That one I don't feel so nostalgic for.
