I take it the opposite direction. Utilitarians seek the greatest good, not the greater good, and we tend towards the long term. We also don't create categories of people whose happiness matters more or less than others. Most situations where groups fight over power or resources are solvable long-term in ways that benefit everyone, while in the short term, supporting one group may be allowed as the best way out of a bad situation. (As I see it, the greatest flaw in many moral codes is that they never allow you to do the wrong thing, even when there's no possible right thing to do. That means you need to come up with an excuse for why some bad thing is actually totally okay and should be done. Once you have that excuse, you'll do it even when you don't need to, because why not do it if it's perfectly acceptable?)
