Hahaha, true. Guess you can always rip the music from the movie/game but it's not the same.

Sometimes it's better IMO. Often times the OST will just straight up omit several songs. And some of them are the best songs!

The official LA Noire OST drastically cuts the title theme to about 3 minutes; the full thing is a Miles Davis-esque gem that's closer to 10.

Or worse, the OST will keep the songs but use different artists!

It took me forever to find the songs I liked from the Prince of Egypt that KEPT the artists who did the songs in the movie.

I agree, though for me it is more about the score than songs. If I like the music in a movie, I really want to be able to listen to it.

Yup. To me, soundtrack = score. I always forget that 'soundtrack' often means 'song playlist' nowadays, it's forever causing me frustration when I'm looking for music from my favorite movies.

OP

I should clarify by soundtrack I mean score. I used original soundtrack (OST) instead of score.

That "tank" is really neat! Is that from an album cover?

Just as general info, trailers often use music that has nothing to do with the actual movie or game score. There are specific composers and composing groups that create 1-3-minute songs that go for a certain sound, be it romance/epic/suspenseful/etc. Two Steps from Hell is one of the more famous production companies for trailer music and you can even buy a few of their public albums on iTunes.

Try listening to their Invincible album on YouTube and you might find you recognize quite a few of the songs from various trailers over the years. The music is also pretty awesome besides!

Or they use music from a completely different movie (e.g. Requiem for a Dream, The Power of One, and Stargate).

There's a bit of music in the 2009 Star Trek that I absolutely adore and it's never appeared on either of the OSTs (original and extended) that were released. I'm probably going to be sad about it my entire life, lol.
