Is this theory in any way related to your general belief that American food is awful

It's an observation based on what people around me tend to complain about.

Come to think of it I actually probably have to make an exception for Californians as a group, because they tend to have the same general food complaints as the people here from China, Nigeria, India etc.

Might be a strong taste thing. I'm from NY with a strong preference for a variety of really strong and spicy ethnic foods all over the city and I know if I go further west or into middle America all the food is bland to me. Cajun food is okay, but all that bread and butter and corn, meh.

That's probably closer to the truth. It's not that there's no flavour in the food in the north of England, but it does seem to be bit on the less nuanced side. There's also a pretty stark contrast in the general availability of international food products here compared to home.

I have to assume anyone from CA or NY is probably used to having that stuff readily available as well.

I'm from Los Angeles and while I wouldn't want to eat it every day, I like going out to a pub and having British food from time to time.
