Re: Things you heard about in fiction, but didn't know were real

To me, Scranton is sort of an everyman town, it's just far enough from all the cities (New York/Philly) to not really have anything noteworthy. It's the Poconos basically. Those who live in Scranton didn't seem to mind The Office being set there and I think they held a few special events in honor of it.

AYRT - Yeah, I remembered that. I think you're right; that's kind of what the show went for, too. Not that the town was bad per se, just not terribly exciting, and they all worked dull office jobs.

I know a lot people commute out of Scranton and in to New Jersey/New York City just because the salaries are that much higher and it's that cheap to live in PA. There's a bunch lakes there that people go to during the summer (the lake mentioned in the show a few times? Yeah, my brother goes there once a summer) and ski resorts in the winter, it's basically a small media market if you will.

"To me, Scranton is sort of an everyman town"

I've had friends who have lived in Scranton call it the Bermuda Triangle of PA. This was in the late 90's, maybe it's changed. I only miss living in Stroudsburg because I could canoe on the Delaware Water Gap.
