It's stood the test of the time. It's still viewed as one of the definitive Batman comics and will continue to do so. Yes the movie version was lukewarm but so was the Watchmen movie.

And IDK about adaptations "not" doing it but given that both Heath Ledger and Jared Leto looked at it for reference (IDK about Nicholson but Tim Burton also cited it as an influence on his films) that says a lot on how important it is.
