One, apartment hunting is the worst and I have so much sympathy

Two, I think the most important thing is figuring out what really matters to you, and what you can compromise on. Is budget the most important thing? A short commute time? Great neighborhood? Nice unit? If it's not going to be possible to get all those things, you gotta figure out how you feel about the tradeoffs. Nicer unit farther away, or kinda crummy unit that's in a great location? That kinda thing.

And then the other thing is, if you can, just try to get a feel for the city and neighborhoods, you know? That's the hardest thing about moving into a new area - you don't have that sense of where you'll want to go and how you'll want to live. And peoples' advice tends to be pretty useless because it's just 100% based on their own preference. So see if you can get around and get some kind of sense of how you feel.

Thanks - yeah, it just doesn't seem possible to get all of the factors, so I know I'm going to have to make some compromises. I had decided to include studios in my search instead of just one-bedrooms, which helps cut down the price a little (not a lot, but a little).

I found a relatively good-sized studio in an area that would give me a pretty short commute and even a possible (long but not insane) walking distance from work on Google last night, so I'm going to head there today with my fingers crossed.
