Keep in mind, if your commute is shorter you will save a little on gas and car maintenance.

And you won't find your ~~dream apartment~~ as you obviously know, but don't settle for roaches or completely unlivable spaces!

I know through family that the area you're looking in is just very expensive overall. :| so I wish you the best of luck. My cousin, right after college, rented a room for about $600. A single, tiny room. I think he was in Alexandria, which admittedly is a particularly pricey place...
