[Arrow, Felicity Smoak]

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You also want to be the most hated character on a TV show?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Is she hated? I only see her when she pops up on the Flash because I'm like... 3 seasons behind on Arrow, but I love her...

When I found out she and Oliver finally stopped dancing around each other and got together too, I was happy.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a lot of the fandom hates her because on Arrow they sort of shifted a lot of the focus from the title character to her. WhichYou might have heard the show sarcastically referred to as "Felicity and Friends". They've had a 15% rating drop from S2 to S3 (when the focus shifted from superhero/crime fighting to relationship drama).

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. I don't think I'd overly mind her being more central because I like her and she tends to balance out Oliver's drama-queen aura, but again, I don't see her regularly because I'm only on like... S02E12, so maybe it's because I don't suffer from oversaturation that she doesn't bother me?

An emphasis on relationship drama WOULD bug me though, because I don't mind relationships existing in these shows, but things like Barry/Iris's will they-won't they drives me nuts. Doesn't make me hate Iris or anything, I just hate the subplot. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only is it romance. But it is a love triangle. The most cliche romance drama possible.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh... why always with the triangles?!

I like Barry. I like Iris. I like the idea of Barry and Iris together.

I don't like how the show's written their relationship. OMG writers stoppp. Get a clue.

Pffffffff please. "shifted a lot of the focus"? All the flashbacks involve Oliver, for one thing, which automatically gives him at least a few extra minutes of screen time every episode compared to her.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
The ratings drop occurred between S3 and S4. The S3 finale had Oliver and Felicity driving into the sunset, having rejected being the Arrow and choosing to be happy far away from Star City. The drop was 17.7% if you look at the averages of both seasons.

S5 opened with the show's lowest rating to date: 1.87 million viewers, which is only the second time Arrow has been under 2m. I know the CW also has access to DVR and +7 day numbers, but yikes.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
IMO part of the drop was the failtastic Raylicity ship. Who wants to watch a creepy bug-eyed motherfucker grossly violating Felicity's boundaries and getting "rewarded" for it? This anon nearly quit watching the show mid-S3 because of it.

The thing is that that portrayal is about as realistic as the superhero thing...so not very. I actually know a few hackers, and they just ended up in decent-but-not-super-special IT jobs.

I thought this was Alex from SVU for a second. I love Alex from SVU.

Don't we all?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised she's getting a lot of hate. It's like the time when I used to be on the Hawaii Five-0 fandom and people hating on Catherine because she's cockblocking the McDanno ship (especially a lot of hate from the gay fanbase who's watching the show because of hot male eye candy). It's really ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'd kind of thought/hoped that we'd gotten past the OMG SHE'S IN THE WAY OF MY GAY SHIP!!! hatred.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the odd thing about Arrow shipping is that there IS no white male slash ship that fandom can hate women over. For the first two seasons the hatred was directed at Laurel for getting in the way of the much more popular Oliver/Felicity.

Fandom was desperate for it to happen, despite knowing that the writers failed miserably at writing the "female love interest for vigilante" type. But they got their desired hook-up, resulting in a stunning case of Be Careful What You Wish For.

Meanwhile, Laurel's character (once freed from the turgid mess of Oliver's love life) grew in popularity thanks to improved writing, leading to massive amounts of backlash when she was killed off.

I don't even WATCH the show, but it's been fascinating to watch the fandom's reaction to all this.

I also wish I was a Mary Sue.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh come one you can't pull that when she's on a superhero show. The whole genre is based on people doing impossible things and always being right.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Oh no, a character on a show with people with above average skills has an above average skill! How dare she!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

"Always being right"? You clearly don't watch Arrow, but okay.

The whole point of Felicity was that she wasn't a superhero; she was a computer genius and a voice of conscience for Oliver. And then her character changed into someone who gets everything handed to her and can do nothing wrong.

I haven't watched Arrow in a while but I enjoyed Felicity when I did, I just like nerdy tech-girls.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I wish they hadn't fridged the lead female character (Black Canary) after years of mistreating her (and the poor actress who played her, who is still getting attacked daily even though she's not on the show anymore) because the writers decided to pander to the vicious fans of Felicity Smoak

I also wish Felicity had a storyline outside of who she is to Oliver.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, she's the ultimate Mary Sue! Her 'accomplishments' are unattainable by definition!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you need to raise the bar on 'unattainable' when a show has superheros/superpowered people/etc.
